Apart from having a rich tradition of classical theatre and ballet, Ljubljana is one of the most important centres of contemporary theatre and dance in this part of Europe.
Cankarjev dom (walking distance from Urban hotel 10 minutes): cultural and congress centre, Slovenia’s largest cultural institution, was built between 1982 and 1983 to designs by the architect Edvard Ravnikar. Its numerous halls, connected by a large foyer on the upper floor and a smaller one on the lower floor, are used as venues for concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and conferences.
Slovenian national Opera and ballet theatre of Ljubljana (walking distance from Urban hotel 4 minutes): the ensemble of the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ljubljana (SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana) performs an extensive repertoire of classical and modern operas, ballets and concert works. Each season it gives approximately 150 performances, both at home and abroad. Its opera and ballet ensembles and orchestra have enjoyed successful collaborations with Slovenian and international artists and producers. The Theatre’s most acclaimed international co-production projects of recent years include Faust, Aida, The Nymphs of the Rhine and The Love for Three Oranges, to name just a few.
Ljubljana puppet theatre (walking distance from Urban hotel 12 minutes): is the country’s premier institution committed to carrying on the long and fruitful tradition of Slovenian puppetry. Since its foundation in 1948, it has been located in a building which had previously housed the famous Slovenian Marionette Theatre, run by the founding father of Slovenian puppetry, the painter Milan Klemenčič. Apart from being home of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, the building also hosts theatre productions and cultural and educational events for children and young people.
Ljubljana City theatre (walking distance from Urban hotel 3 minutes): is Ljubljana’s main city theatre. It was established in 1949. Its repertoire consists of both theatre classics and works by contemporary Slovenian and international authors, including a large proportion of comedies and musicals.
Dance theatre Ljubljana (walking distance from Urban hotel 19 minutes): is a small but artistically exciting contemporary dance theatre. Its programme of productions, put together by an artistic board consisting of both long-established and young artists, is orientated towards innovation and experimentation. Its productions are staged in collaboration with choreographers from home and abroad, many of them recipients of national and international dance awards.
